The Second Level Support Service will provide support to teachers of Civic, Social and Political Education (CSPE) during the Spring and Summer terms as follows:
National In-service - Special one off courses:
In February and March the Citizenship Education Support Team will provide six special one off in-service courses on different aspects of the teaching and learning of Civic, Social and Political Education. The details are set out below.
Stewardship and Sustainable Development in CSPE:
The environment and the issue of sustainable development are very topical at the moment as governments and societies grapple with the challenges of global warming and climate change. This course will focus on teaching and learning strategies, methodologies and resource materials on the concept of Stewardship. How can we encourage our students to use the 'Power of 1'?
Using Film in the CSPE Classroom:
Over recent years many films, documentaries and TV programmes have been made focusing on Citizenship themes. This course will look at film as a teaching and learning tool in the CSPE classroom. Have you thought about how you might use any of the following in your CSPE class: Hotel Rwanda or Shooting Dogs, Inside I'm Dancing, An Inconvenient Truth, Schindler's List, Rabbit Proof Fence, The West Wing, News2Day, Gandhi, Crash, Planet Earth, The House of the Oireachtas, Cry Freedom, The Amazing Mrs. Pritchard, etc.?
Teaching about Europe in CSPE:
On the 1st of January the European Union expanded to twenty seven member states with the joining of Bulgaria and Romania. This course will provide opportunities to explore methodologies and resource materials for teaching and learning about Europe and its institutions: The Council of Europe, The European Union, The European Commission, The European Parliament and how these institutions impact of the lives of people living in Ireland. How can we bring these institutions alive for young people?
Simulations and Drama in CSPE:
Very often the use of the term 'drama' in the context of active learning methods creates extreme reactions of enthusiasm of fear. Why not come along to explore and experience a range of drama in education techniques which may be used in the CSPE classroom without students ever having to act on stage. This course will focus on a variety of techniques including Freeze Framing, Hot Seating, Mantle of Expert, Thought Tracking, Moving Debates, etc.
The Reluctant Learner and CSPE:
This course is offered in collaboration with our colleagues on the Junior Certificate Schools Programme (JCSP). The focus here will be on strategies, approaches and resources which will support the reluctant learner in the CSPE classroom. How can we support crosscurricular activities? What about using cross-curricular themes?
Using Information and Communication Technology in CSPE:
This course will explore the use of ICT as teaching and learning tools in the CSPE classroom. How can we use PowerPoint, Microsoft Publisher, CD-Roms to enhance the students experience? How can we utilise the use of digital photographs and digital video? How do we access the many many websites with Citizenship themes?
