The Second Level Support Service will continue supporting the teachers of chemistry at Senior Cycle through courses organised in association with Education Centres. School visits will be undertaken in response to requests and by agreement with school management, where resources permit.
A consultation service by fax, phone or email will be available. Further support will be offered through an issue of the “Physical Sciences” magazine, which will be circulated to all schools during the coming term and through the Chemistry pages of the SLSS website, www.slss.ie.
The chemistry support courses available from January - June include:
Modular Courses:
SL0620 Induction Course for teachers of Chemistry
This course commenced in the Autumn term. The final day of this course will be held before Easter. Participants will be been informed of the exact date and venue in good time.
SL0625 Transition Year Science - some new practical approaches
This course commenced in the Autumn term. The final day of this course will be held before Easter and will focus on Chemistry. Participants will be been informed of the exact date and venue in good time.
SL0621 Using ICT to enhance teaching and learning of Chemistry in the classroom.
This course commenced in the Autumn term. The final day of this course will be held before Easter. Participants will receive notification in good time. The dates are as follows:
Chemistry Resource Day
Many resources will be demonstrated on the day. These will include Software Applications, Animations, Books, Resource Packs, Videos, PowerPoints, Electronic Worksheets and many others. Participants will be invited to bring along and present any resource they themselves use.

Datalogging Induction in Chemistry
A series of one day hands-on workshops on how datalogging can enhance practical work in chemistry have been organised. Three
workshops took place in first term and further courses are planned, in the venues below, for the second term. Ten experiments suitable
for Leaving Certificate Chemistry can be sampled. Three datalogging workshops will take place at the following venues. Laboratory
venues and precise dates will be notified later. Application forms may be downloaded from the chemistry section of the website.
Network Evening Meetings
Following on from the success of these evening courses last year it is hoped to run evening meetings in each of the six Education Regions. (see Map in Brochure). The aim is to run a Chemsketch/PowerPoint workshop in selected Education Centres. These workshops are organised in partnership with the Education Centres and with the local branches of the ISTA.

Magazine
The Physical Sciences magazine will be published and available in schools in January 2007. If you would like to contribute an article for inclusion in the magazine please send it to brendanduane@slss.ie. If you have come across useful resources on the internet please share them with us.
