Welcome to the Second Level Support Service (SLSS) web site.

This site is dedicated to supporting the professional development of teachers in second level schools.

• The site sets out the programme of professional development being offered by the SLSS in the school year 2009-2010.
• Contact information for the SLSS development officers and the individual programme support teams is provided.
• Issues and topics of interest are examined in a range of up to date downloadable documents.

The Second Level Support Service offers school based support, staff development programmes, regional cluster based support and modular courses.

A feature of support is a focus on generic areas such as teaching and learning methodologies, the curriculum aspect of school development planning, independent learning skills, enterprise education, preparation for the world of work, school-industry-community links, citizenship education and literacy across the curriculum. It is intended that the Second Level Support Service will also develop a capacity to help address the broader support needs of schools and assist in meeting the challenge of future change in education.

The aims of the SLSS are:

• to assist teachers in acquiring the skills they need to provide their pupils with desired learning experiences
• to assist schools in making informed choices about the programmes that best suit their pupils
• to promote greater coherence in the provision of support
• to take account of the constraints within which schools operate.

Overall, the SLSS will promote a strategic approach to the provision of support for second level schools.

The Second Level Support Service has been organised on a regional basis. The regional arrangement is illustrated in the Contacts section of this site. The names and contact details for the development officers associated with each region are shown.
